Overview

Status: client project. Client details are anonymised under NDA. This page documents the engineering approach and measurable outcomes.

A regional healthcare network with 42 clinics and 1.2 million registered patients needed a unified mobile experience to replace five disconnected patient portals. We designed and built a cross-platform app from scratch — covering appointment scheduling, live vitals streaming from wearables, video consultations, lab result delivery and e-prescriptions — all within a HIPAA-compliant architecture with end-to-end encryption and biometric authentication.

Problem

Patients juggled separate apps for appointments, lab results and prescriptions, leading to a 68% drop-off rate and over 14,000 missed appointments per month. The existing systems had no real-time capability — lab results took 48 hours to appear, and rescheduling required a phone call. The client needed a single app that felt consumer-grade but met healthcare-grade compliance.

Approach

We built the app in React Native with a shared design system across iOS and Android. A real-time sync layer powered by WebSockets streams vitals data from Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect at sub-second latency. The telemedicine module uses WebRTC with adaptive bitrate for low-bandwidth regions. The backend runs on a HIPAA-compliant cloud with field-level encryption, audit logging and automatic PHI redaction. We implemented offline-first architecture with conflict resolution so patients in rural areas can access records without connectivity.

Result

The app reached 380,000 active users within five months of launch — a 4.8-star rating on both app stores. Missed appointments dropped by 61%, telemedicine adoption hit 34% of all consultations, and the client reduced call center volume by 45%. The app processes 2.1 million health data points daily and has passed SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA certification audits.

“Patients stopped calling the clinic about results the same week we shipped. The offline behaviour in rural areas was not a nice-to-have for us; it was the whole requirement.”
